Youth of the Island Field—Growing Up Off the Beaten Path of Society
Tamara Eckhardt, 2019–2021
There is seemingly nothing that would bring a sparkle to the eyes of the children and young people in these pictures that depict a bleak and dismal area with trampled green patches and garbage in the corners. Irish children and young people from Island Field gaze into Tamara Eckhardt’s camera, with expressions ranging from serious and dismissing to grim and defiant or sad and resigned. Once planned as a model urban project in the green countryside outside of the city center, the housing estate turned out to be like so many other failed projects of this sort all over the world. Without proper infrastructure, lacking perspective, and cut off from urban centers, these areas develop into ghettos, with the result that an improvement of the living situation becomes increasingly inaccessible to the inhabitants—a bright future cannot be expected here, and that is exactly what is written on the faces of these children.
